SLANIC-MOLDOVA, town in E Romania (Bacau county), situated on the river Slanic (a tributary of the river Trotus), at the E foot of the Nemira Mountains (Eastern Carpathians), elevation 530 m, in a hollow surrounded by beech and fir-tree woods, 84 km SW of the mucicipality of Bacau (seat of Bacau county); population 5,420 (July 1, 1991).
All-season resort of national importance, with a slightly excitant intramontane-depression climate, with cean air free of dust and allergens and rich in resinous aerosols and negative ions. The annual average temperature is of 7.4°C and the annual precipitation averages 700 mm. The resort of Slanic- Moldova is renowned for its springs of carbonated, bicarbonated, slightly sulphurous, chlorided, sodic, hypertonic, hypotonic and certain oligomineral waters discovered in 1801. The first chemical tests of these waters were done in 1852 and after 1877 the first balneal facilities were introduced. The therapeutic qualities of the waters here have been confirmed in the course of time by the medals won at the international exhbitions in Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main, etc., experts comparing them to the mineral waters of Karlovy Vary, Vichy, Aix-les-Bains, a.o.
Styled the "Pearl of Moldavia", the resort offers treatment for digestive disorders (hypoacid and hyperacid chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers at no less than three years after the painful stage, conditions after operated stomach, nonspecific chronic colitis, irritable colon, chronic constipation), hepatobiliary diseases (biliary dyskinesis, calculous or non- calculous chronic cholecystitis, conditions after operated liver), metabolic and nutrition diseases (diabetes mellitus, light and medium forms, obesity), kidney and urinary diseases (conditions after urinary infections after drug treatment, without lesions or disorders of the kidneys). In external cures, the mineral waters here are effectual in the treatment of degenerative and abarticular rheumatic diseases, cardiovascular, respiratory (allergic asthma, chronic tracheobronchitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, pulmonary emphysema), endocrine (prepubertal conditions in hyperreactive children), gynecological (menopausal ovarian syndrome) and other diseases. There are fountains for internal cures with mineral water (the springs nr. 1,8 and 8 bis are grouped in one pavilion while 1 bis, 3 and 10 are grouped in another), facilities for warm mineral-water baths, respiratory therapy (aerosols and inhalations), electrotherapy and hydrotherapy, pool for kinetotherapy, mofette, installation for the treatment of certain peripheral vascular disorders, medical gyms. Patients can go by coach to the underground balneal sanatorium, with a salt-mine microclimate, at Targu Ocna (18 km). Mineral-water bottling sation.
