SINGEORZ-BAI, town in N extremity of Romania (Bistrita-Nasaud county), situated upstream the river Somesu Mare, at the S foot of the Rodna Mountains (Eastern Carpathians), in a zone of hills, elevation 435-450 m, 50 km NE of the municipality of Bistrita (seat of Bistrita-Nasaud county); population 10,519 (July 1, 1991). All-season resort of national importance (known as a spa since the 17th c.) having a moderate uplands climate with cool summers (July average -5.5°C). The annual average temperature is of 7.5°C, the humidity exceeds 82% and the precipitation averages 800 mm annually.
Many springs of biocarbonated, chlorided, sodic, calcic, magnesian, carbonated, hypertonic and isotonic mineral waters; mineral mud; mofette. The mineral waters here qualitatively vie with those of Vichy (France) and Karlovy Vary (Czechia), proving their superiority in the treatment of disorders of the alimentary canal (chronic hypoacid and hyperacid gastritis, chronic gastric and duodenal ulcers, sequelae after operations on the stomach for ulcer, chronic colitis, chronic constipation), hepatobiliary diseases (biliary dyskinesis, chronic calculous or noncalculous cholecystitis, conditions after liver operations, chronic hepatitis, chronic pancreatitis), metabolic and nutrition diseases (diabets mellitus, hyperuricemia, hyperlipemia, obesity, gout with articular manifestations). In external cures, the mineral waters here have a therapeutic effect on degenerative and abarticular rheumatic diseases. The resort is equipped with facilities for warm mineral-water baths in tubs, electrotherapy and hydrotherapy,
aerosols and inhalations, application of warm mineral mud and paraffin, mofette; fountains with mineral water for internal cures; medical gyms. Mineral water bottling station. Accomodation is provided by the Hebe balneal compound, with its own treatment base and a capacity of 900 places, a sanatorium complex (600 places) and many comfortable villas with a capacity of about 550 places.
Various recreation and amusement oportunities: club, cinema, mechanical games parlour, tennis courts and volleyball grounds, trips on the Prihodiste-Marcus Hill where there is a natural sonorous mofette (gas passing through water produces a noise like boiling which can be heard from a distance), to the famous wine cellar at Lechinta where wine tasting is organized, or to the municipality of Bistrita to see the walls of the mediaeval city (15th c.) and the Coopers Tower, the House of the Silversmith (15th c.) which shelters the history-archaeology section of the County Museum, the "Sugalete" buildings (15th-16th c.), a unique compound comprising 20 exterior arcades that make up a gallery with vaults resting on 21 pillars.
