MONEASA, commune in W Romania (Arad county), situated on the river Moneasa, at the foot of the Codru-Moma Massif, elevation 290 m, 110 km NE of the municipality of Arad; population 1,140 (July 1, 1991). All-season resort of national importance with a sedative, moderate hillside climate. Summers are pleasant (July average temperature 20°C) and winters are mild (January average - 1.1°C). The average annual temperature is of 9.5°C and the precipitation totals about 1,000 mm annually. Markedly ionized air.
The springs of bicarbonated, calcic, magnesian, sodic, oligomineral, mesothermal (24-32°C) waters are recommended in the treatment of degenerative rheumatic diseases (simple, uncomplicated forms of cervical, lumbar and dorsal spondylosis), abarticular rheumatic diseases (scapulohumeral periarthrittis), peripheral and central nervous diseases (recent light paresis in the recovery stage after specialized treatment, old sequels after poliomyelitis, certain forms of hemiparesis and paraparesis, on medical advice), gynecological disorders (minor genital disorners on a hyperreactive nevous background), metabolic and nutrition diseases (diabetes mellitus, obesity), etc. Facilities are available for warm mineral-water baths in tubs, for electrotherapy, hydrotherapy and kinetotherapy, outdoor pools for cold mineral-water baths, sunbathing areas. Many recreation opportunities and facilities (theatre and cinema halls, mineral water pools, bowling, boating on the lake, sportsgrounds, trips to the Cave of Bats,
to the ruins of the Dezna citade, 13th c., the Boroaia waterfall etc.).
