Lacul Rosu

Lacu rosu, all-season health and holiday resort of national importance - a component of the town of Gheorgheni (Harhita county), situated in N central Romania, in a depression surrounded by the Suhard, Tarcau, Hasmas and Giurgeu Mountains (Eastern Carpathians), on the shore of the natural storage lake called Lacu Rosu, elevation 980 m, 73 km N of the municipality of Miercurea-Ciuc (seat of Harhita county. Due to its position the resort of Lacu Rosu is sheltered against strong winds, having a tonic-stimulant montane climate with cool summers (July average temperature 15°c) and cold winters (january average 7°C below). Annual average temperature about 5.5°C, average precipitation 1,000 mm annually.
The tonic-stimulant climate characterized by relatively low atmospheric pressure, celan air free of dust and allergens and strongly ozoniferous account for the resort being recommended in the treatment of asthenic neurosis, wakly conditions, physical and intellectual overexertion, growth disorders in children, rachitis, etc.
In winter the resort draws ski amateurs, having medium-difficult ski runs (on the Suhardul Mare Massif there is one of the country's best ski runs - 2,400 m and an elevation difference of 600 m); in summer visitors can use the sports sites, open-air pool, as well as opportunities for boating and fishing in the natural storage lake, and even of mountaineering (in the Bicaz Gorge, 3 km from the resort). One can make many trips in the mountains around, such as to the Suhard chalet, the Ucigasul Mountain, the Bicaz Gorge (8 km long complex natural preserve, exquisite landscape), the Izvorul Muntelui storage lake on the river Bicaz, etc. Alpine climbers can try the many lines from here, from simple to the most difficult, on Suhard, Bardos Stone, Surduc Stone etc.

trips by buss, for a day or two, to Gheorgheni, Borsec, Sovata, Bicaz, Piatra Neamt etc, can be ordered.
The main draw of the resort is the natural storage lake (Lacu Rosu), the only one of this kind in the country, which formed in 1837 when the Ghilcos peak of the Suhard Mountains slided and barred the river Bucaz upstream. The lake is 10.5 m deep and 12.6 hectares in area. The name of Lacu Rosu (red Lake) comes from the reddish alluvia deposited in the lake by its main tributary - Piriul Rosu (Red Creek).
Near the lake, at the feet of the Suhardul Mare Pick, is the Lacu Rosu Motel (Vila no. 46, with 83 beds in 2-3 beds rooms and in 4-5 beds apartments, each with own bath).
Near the Motel there is the lacu Rosu restaurant (200 places), available for organisation of conferences professional meetings and others.
In the resort are other vilas, restaurants, bars and camping places. One of the most representative is the "Raza Soarelui" Vila (80 places) with beautiful view on the Suhardul Mic.
