    HEALTH RESORTS AND SPAS

Spas are special functional categories in the structure of the urban and rural network of Romania. 35 towns and 103 rural settlements are spas with services functions. Spas and resorts provide complex facilities. Spas may be considered the first attempts at organized tourism and are the bestt equipped for tourist circulation. In turn, the touristic function has generateed a quite novel type of urban sttlements, i.e. spas, resorts and recreational places.

Spas are located in the major natural units of the territory of Romania, the Carpathian Arch and the Black Sea coast first of all, then also in the plains, hily or Sub-Carpathians regions, most of these having a local character. The oldest and most vatious spas are in the Estearn Carphatians, given the experience and importance of mineral waters here. Estimations show that there are no less than 1,500 mineral springs in the Eastern Carpathians displaying a large variety in point of chemical composition; that and handy discharges (captured or drilled springs) accountered for the emergence and development of spas long ago. The use of mineral waters in these mountains for therapeutic purposes goees back to 16th century when physician Bucello recommended to prince of Transylvania a mineral water cure at one of the springs in Borsec. Most of the mineral water sources known to this day in the current spas were discovered early in the 19th century.

The great balneoclimateric complexes are located today in renowned tourist and balneal regions.

Worth mentioning are the spas north of the Eastern Carpathians such as Vatra Dornei, Saru Dornei, Poiana Negrii, Singeorz-Bai, Borsa etc.

The Bilbor-Ciuc corridor spas, the most important balneoclimateric complex in the Eastern Carpathians, with the renowned carbbonated mineral waters at Borsec, Baile Tusnad etc. Here is also the famous resort Lacu Rosu.

On the Trotus river there is the so-called "perla Moldovei" (Pearl of Moldavia), spa of Slanic-Moldova, as well as Tirgu Ocna a.s.o. At the foot of Ciucas Mountains there is Cheia holiday resort.

There are many other such resorts in the Brasov Depression (Malnas, Bicsad, Vilcele, Sovata, Zizin etc.).

Remarkable are also the spas in the Southern Carpathians, such as Calimanesti-Caciulata, Baile Olanesti in the Olt Valley, Baile Govora and Voineasa near it, or the Baile Herculane spa on the western side of the Mehedinti Mountains, a thermal water spa known since Roman times.

In the Western Carpathians deserving special mention are the mineral springs in the spas of Geoagiu-Bai, Vata de Jos and Moneasa, with quite special therapeutic properties. Stana de Vale is also an important spa.

There are countless resorts in the Sub-Carpathians, hilly and plain regions, many of which are in the neighbourhood of great towns. Example of the latter are Baile Felix and Baile 1 Mai near Oradea municipality (seat of Bihor county) or Lacu Sarat near Braila municipality (seat of Braila county).

Famous worldwide and nationwide are the spas on the spas on the Romanian Black Sea coast - Eforie, Techirghiol, Mangalia with the string of adjoining spas (Saturn, Venus, Cap Aurora, Jupiter, Neptun, Olimp) and Mamaia, an expression of the best organization of treatment and tourism.

Romania boasts strong balneoclimateric facilities in all zones of the country, well-equipped resorts meeting the highest demands of the beneficiar
